When their one and only standing frame broke, the Neurosciences team at VGH knew where to turn for help. And they weren’t disappointed.
Thanks to a $6,000-plus donation from the VGH Thrift Store, the team is proud to include a new standing frame in their unit’s gym for patient rehabilitation.
“The standing frame is an excellent piece of equipment for patients recovering from stroke, a traumatic brain injury and other neurological conditions,” says Moira McPeake, VGH physiotherapist. “We use it during the very early stages of rehab when patients are just starting to move again and can’t fully hold their own weight.”
In addition to supporting patients with their physical recovery, Moira says the “feel good factor” for patients is just as important. “Patients really enjoy the feeling of standing on their feet again; it contributes to their sense of wellbeing,” she explains.
And, because the standing frame helps hold patients’ weight, the equipment ensures patient and staff safety by reducing the risk of falls and back sprains and strains.
“After our last standing frame broke, we were really missing it,” says Moira. “It’s great that we’re back on track again and we’re very thankful to the VGH Thrift Store for making this possible.”
